What is Lyme Disease

In case you haven’t heard, lyme disease is a tick-borne illness that affects the lives of millions of people. It’s caused by a dreadful bacteria called Borrelia Burgdorferi, and a whole bunch of people are getting sick from it. Recent estimates show over 400,000 new people each year getting infected. To put it into perspective, that’s more new cases than breast cancer, colon cancer or HIV.
Something to think about, right?
Lyme disease is called “The Great Imitator” because its symptoms mimic many other diseases. It can affect any system of the body, including the brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, and the heart.
And despite what you may have heard, it is NOT hard to catch and it can be very difficult to treat if not caught early. Lyme diseases cases have been reported in all 50 states and on every continent except Antarctica.

What about Mosquitos?

It’s not just ticks that carry disease. West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States. There are currently no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people and about 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.
West Nile cases have been also been reported in all 50 states. While Dengue and Malaria are not something we typically worry about in the US, it should be top of mind when traveling.
